How accurate is your Brewery lab? Find out with BIRA’s 2026 Proficiency Testing Program

When it comes to quality assurance, confidence in your lab results is just as important as the results themselves. That’s where BIRA (Brewing Industry Research Alliance) Proficiency Testing comes in.

Designed specifically for independent breweries, IBA Associate Member BIRA provides an affordable and practical way to verify laboratory performance, benchmark results against industry peers, and demonstrate due diligence to customers, auditors, and regulators.

Unlike larger international proficiency schemes that focus primarily on filtered lagers, BIRA’s samples reflect the beers Australian independent breweries actually produce, including unfiltered, hazy, and dry-hopped styles, alongside traditional filtered beers. Anyone who has attempted to measure bitterness or ABV in a heavily dry-hopped beer accurately will understand why that’s important.

Why Participate?

Proficiency testing is one of the most cost-effective ways for a brewery to validate its laboratory processes and build confidence in its quality control systems.

Each BIRA testing round operates as an inter-laboratory comparison, covering core brewery analyses and providing detailed reporting, including:

  • Z-scores to benchmark performance
  • Youden plots to identify bias and precision
  • Comparative data across participating breweries and laboratories
  • Evidence to support quality assurance and audit requirements

For many breweries, the greatest value lies in maintaining a documented record that demonstrates the lab is producing reliable and accurate results. Whether responding to customer enquiries, audit requirements, or internal quality reviews, proficiency testing provides independent verification that your laboratory is performing as expected.

Built for Independent Brewers (that’s you guys!)

BIRA typically attracts 30–40 participants each year, ranging from small breweries producing less than 100,000 litres annually through to national brewing operations, as well as commercial and university laboratories. The broad participation creates robust comparison statistics that benefit everyone involved.

The more breweries that participate, the stronger the industry benchmarking becomes, helping raise quality standards and laboratory proficiency across the independent brewing sector as a whole.
