The IBA is expanding its membership to include independent retailers, venues and individuals that want to be part of the organisation and the independent beer movement but can’t otherwise become a member of the IBA under a new membership category – True Indie Supporter.

“The Independent beer movement has always been broader than breweries – and we are excited to welcome further parts of the supply chain, and indeed consumers or passionate advocates to wave the indie beer flag as a True Indie Supporter,” says Sabrina Kunz, IBA CEO.

The IBA had received a lot of feedback that there are individuals, sole traders, venues and retailers that want to show their support for the independent brewing sector but didn’t know how they could get more involved. As a result, we’ve established a new membership category which enables us to welcome in more members and active supporters of Australian independent beer.

There are several benefits for businesses or individuals who become a True Indie Supporter, but fundamentally, the launch of the True Indie Support strengthens the IBA’s ability to undertake collective action.

“Within my role of membership engagement and communications, I’ve seen support for the IBA growing pretty strongly, across all breweries of all sizes, and in the supply chain. But it isn’t just breweries and trade partners looking to join us, its individuals and businesses like bars and bottleshops as well – its people who believe strongly in the importance of independent beer. “

“I’m really excited we are able to deliver this option to our community and have the opportunity to engage even more people on the benefits of the IBA and the extensive work we are doing.” Says Jono Outred, Membership Engagement Officer.

The True Indie Supporter membership category launches at an exciting and pivotal time for the IBA, as membership numbers continue to grow steadily in the first half of 2026.
