Beer is missing from the Coalition’s Budget in Reply

Last night, Peter Dutton delivered the Budget in Reply – which has been the most complete look so far at the Coalition’s priorities ahead of the election.
Notably, the Budget in Reply did not reaffirm the commitment made only weeks ago to match Labor’s 2-year commitment to freeze the indexation of the draught beer excise tax. We can only hope that the promise made by Angus Taylor is something that we can rely on as we move into the election.
Dutton did make a number of claims that, if they were backed by policy and funding, could improve the situation for independent brewers:
- A commitment to removing regulatory burdens, green and red tape – where there is duplication across local, state and federal government.
- Making energy more affordable and reliable again with a National Gas Plan.
- Increase the instant asset write-off for small businesses from $1,000 to $30,000 and make the arrangement ongoing.
- Provide small businesses with a $20,000 per year for business related meal expenses – unfortunately this promise does not include alcohol but we’re sure will help our members who have hospitality venues.
- The reduction in fuel excise tax – which could have the effect of reducing logistics costs.
The response was of course on behalf of the Coalition.
Given the strong support from National Party MP‘s and David Littleproud – we are obviously disappointed that the Coalition’s focus on supporting small business and cutting red-tape did not include any tailored support for Australian independent breweries.
But they have the next 5 weeks to correct that!
