Tasmanian Container Deposit Scheme one step closer

29 September 2024

On Wednesday, 25 September, The Tasmanian government announced the commencement of Tasmania’s container deposit scheme (CDS) – Recycle Reward – for mid-2025.

TasRecycle, a not-for-profit entity comprising Asahi Beverages, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Lion, has been appointed as Scheme Co-ordinator.

There will initially be 49 container refund points available across Tasmania. TOMRA Cleanaway has been appointed the network operator and this is the third jurisdiction where TOMRA Cleanaway has that role as they are currently network operators in the New South Wales and Victorian schemes.

Tasmania is the final piece of the container refund scheme puzzle in Australia, with all states and territories now legislating extended producer responsibility for single use drink containers.

For brewers in Tasmania and selling packaged product in the Tasmanian market there will be considerable work to do as the scheme ramps up to register products and understand the administrative requirements.
