IBA responds to QLD draft bill about online liquor sales

The IBA has today submitted a response to the Queensland Government on behalf of our members in relation to consultation on the Liquor and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024.

Legislative reform around online liquor sales started in earnest in January 2023.  It was in response to a 2020 Palaszczuk Government election promise to “consider the efficacy of introducing a regulatory framework governing online alcohol sales and deliveries in consultation with Retail Drinks Australia and other key industry and community stakeholders”.

The IBA were not involved in some of the initial consultations in early 2023 but did respond to the Digital Age Verification consultation earlier this year.  These issues are linked – as you will see in the response.

The Exposure Draft that we responded to did not come with any further explanatory memorandum and also did not include the text of all of the matters moved to regulations. What this means, is that the practical implications (and costs) of some of the issues raised by the draft legislation are impossible to forecast at this stage.

The deadline for the submission is COB tomorrow, 6 September 2024, and any members wanting further information can get in touch with Sabrina Kunz at the IBA.
