At the recent Food Ministers Meeting on 25 July 2024, FSANZ, reported the findings of the consumer research in relation to P1049 (Carbohydrate and Sugar Claims on Alcoholic Beverages). The report found that the research was broadly consistent with the previously available evidence:

  • that sugar and carbohydrate claims have no effect on consumers’ intent to consume alcohol or likelihood of modifying food intake or physical activity.

FSANZ is also progressing work on Proposal P1059 (Energy Labelling on Alcoholic Beverages) and “is examining options for the declaration of energy content information in a prescribed format on the label of packaged alcoholic beverages”.

Both proposals (energy labelling and sugar and carbs claims) are expected to be considered by the FSANZ Board for decision in late 2024. It is not expected that there will be the opportunity for any further input to the work programs.
